Lumiar, Lisbon's Northern threshold
A few hundred years ago, fields of wheat and barley stood alongside wine and olive oil producers where, today, the stadium for Sporting futebol rises above it all. Historically an agricultural community, this sector was increasingly urbanized and incorporated into the city of Lisbon in 1855. Its many palaces and estates, built since the 18th century, retain the historic character of the area. Green space abounds and includes a golf course. Families and singles, young and old, fill these quiet streets and shop at local stores owned by generations of the same families. Here, neighbors know their neighbors. Positioned on the northern outskirts of Lisbon, easy access into and away from the city is guaranteed and gave the area its name as the 'threshold' to the city. But be warned: on Sporting game days, it's not wise to be seen in a red dress in this area of the green Sporting Clube de Portugal.
